Primitive Table + Fresh Perspective

I wanted to share with you my recent find.

A year or two ago, my sister purchased this amazing table she found on Craigslist.  It is solid wood table on wheels with two leaves (which have old newspapers glued to the underneath!) and six chairs with real leather seat cushions.

As I'm sure many of you can relate, Karen & her husband Brian got sick of this thing taking up space in their garage while "refinishing" it.  (I say refinishing in quotations because I have about 30 projects sitting around my house waiting to be "refinished".  #TheStruggleIsReal)  They decided to sell it at a garage sale this past summer and I snagged it up.  After all, I DO need another table for our small little house, don't I?  I knew Marcus would love it, so yes.  The answer is yes.

But seriously, look at this beauty.  So much charm with so many stories I'm sure.  It needs some work... The chairs need to be taken apart and stabilized.   Two of the chair covers are ripped and need to be replaced.  It could be painted or sanded and re-stained but at the end of the day, I kind of love it the way it is.

So for now, this beauty joins our collection of functional, simple, imperfect home decor.

THE BIG PICTURE

— Imperfect Simplicity 2017-10-04 21-10-53.png

A.  Blankets and pillows.  Add a plush blanket or pillows to a seating area to warm it up or make it feel cozy.  Perfect for fall!  I got this blanket long before I was a conscience shopper at Marshalls or TJ Maxx.  I'd recommend finding an ethically sourced lamb fur throw blanket or pick something up at a second hand store.

B.  Air plants, succulents, and living plants.  House plants can reduce carbon dioxide levels, increase humidity, reduce certain pollutants, reduce airborne dust levels, keep air temperatures down, and just flat out make you happy and feel better.  Every once in awhile, I pick up plants at grocery stores but I've learned to find a local greenhouse to educate me on what I need based on my home and lifestyle.  I live in Northern Colorado and LOVE Ginestra at Gully Greenhouse.

C.  Decorative lighting.  I love lighting but great, permanent, artificial lighting is not at the top of the priority list currently.  For the holidays, we got creative and what do you know?  It's stayed up all year!  White wire string lights with beer pong balls add a touch of fun while adding some light to the hallway.

D.  Eucalyptus.  If you follow my Instagram or Pinterest, it's not hard to tell how much I love flowers and greenery.  I would have florist arrangements or fresh foliage in my house all the time if I could.  If I have to stay on a budget and do it myself, basic is better.  Enter eucalyptus.  They are soooo pretty, easy to arrange, and inexpensive ($2.50 a bunch at Trader Joe's.  This arrangement has four bunches.)  Eucalyptus oil has a ton of health benefits but even having some cut plants around your house can help with sinus and allergies, odor remover, and act as an air freshener.  Plus they dry nice and can be passed off to sustainable and ethical stores like Haus Of Fiber to create beautiful materials.

E.  Natural Light.  Depending on your home, you may or may not have much control over this.  We have some areas in our house that are just naturally dark and some that have good lighting.  With that being said, I am obsessed with natural lighting.  Research has proven natural lighting helps people be more productive, happier, healthier, and calmer.  So open those blinds and curtains up!  This room tends to be darker so I brightened it up with shades of white, no curtains, and simple/light decor.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Pick one room in your home.  With looking at the big picture above and not spending a dime, is there anything in there you can add or take away to create freedom? Take away stress? Bring in fresh air?

If budget wasn't an option (minus remodeling your home or moving), what would you add or take away?

Grab a notebook or a journal and write them down.  Make the changes you can, now.  Once you have some goals written out, it is so much easier to keep yourself in check to not make unnecessary purchases yet find the things you really want/need within your means.

Leave a comment.  Let's talk this out!

Four Years & Counting | Anniversaries in Pictures

So this one time, Marcus and Janie got married.  There was this painted backdrop at the reception but Marcus and Janie forgot entirely about it due to festivities, fabulous family and friends getting them drinks, cutting a rug all night long, and socializing like crazy.  When Marcus and Janie realized they took not one photograph upon the backdrop, they were saddened.  What is a lad and his lady to do?  An idea sprung and from that point on, the Mr. and Mrs. decided to take anniversary pictures in their wedding attire to include said backdrop.

And they lived happily ever after (in real life, not fairytale land)...

Backyard Living | Black or White?

Source

Source

We have been slowly but surely working on our backyard.  It is a pretty big yard and four years ago, it was entirely weeds.  Three years ago, we laid some sod in a small section of it and put in a small area for a fire pit.  It has been overwhelming to say the least, especially after we got quotes for a new fence ringing in at $8-9k and professional landscaping at $15-30k on top of that.  At this point, there is a big list that will see that $25k before the yard ever does.

We are at that comfortable DIY place again.  We find ourselves there often.  It is sometimes tiring but worth it once it's done.... right!?!?!?!!

I think we have the groove started but now to decide on colors.  When I say colors, I mean black and white.  We definitely will have natural wood elements mixed in with rock and greenery.  We will most likely have other pops of colors mixed in as well.  But I'm talking about that base color.  Do we go with rich, sleek, mod, plant-poppin' black?  Or light, bright, farmhouse fresh white?

I just don't know!  All these spaces are so incredible and it is so hard to decide.

What would you do?  What do you love?  Does your outdoor space have a common thread tying it all together?

When you have awesome girlfriends, a spunky daughter, and a husband who is usually down for anything, you dress up for the Kentucky Derby.  Even if we don't technically have a party to go to, we bring the party!

When it comes to dress up, I've been known for making spontaneous purchases.  Have I told you how much I love playing dress up?  I may or may not have a problem. Am I talking to anyone else out there?

With that being said, I have been feeling really convicted about fast fashion.  Americans are purchasing five times the amount of clothing than they did in 1980.  The average American household produces 70 pounds of textile waste every year.

Fast fashion brings considerable consumption that prospers the fashion industry. Its unique business model and low prices enables the public to purchase fashionable items even during times of the economic recession. However, it has brought along the problem of overconsumption, whereby countless amounts of waste ends up in landfills. Moreover, hidden costs of landfills also include waste, pollution, energy and natural resources exhaustion.  (Source: Wikipedia)

For the next 90 days of blogging, I'm going to focus on ethical and sustainable fashion and home design.

Will you join me?  Be sure to be subscribed and stay tuned for more.

This past summer, our good friend Debbie bought a fixer-upper travel trailer.  She lives in an HOA and couldn't park it there to work on it so we let her park in in our driveway while she jazzed it up.  There were many nights of bringing her tacos and beer and long chats while she worked.  Hey, we helped occasionally!  But you have to understand, this woman is a Bad-A and she was all over it, far beyond our experience.  As we watched the transformation, we became super inspired about the idea of getting our own trailer to have as a guest house in our backyard, travel with while we AirBNB our home(#imperfectsimplicity730), and perhaps rent out for others to enjoy too.

We took the plunge.  In August of 2016, we purchased our first travel trailer.  It's a 1978 Rambler Ramblerette.  We looked at a few other trailers but decided on this one because it's not quite as heavy as an Airstream [weighing 4k pounds] but big enough to customize to our living wants, needs, and desires [measuring 24'].  It seemed everything was original with its amazing color scheme welcoming us with wide open arms.  All it needs is some cosmetic renovations but heck, we don't really know.  We are professional amateurs.

Now the adventures begin.  So many plans for this baby BUT permission to talk real life here?  It has been sitting in front of our house for 9 months, staring at our faces, scaring us.  This was one of those "quick fixer uppers" and now it's pretty much gutted, waiting for some love.  It is intimidating.  We have never done anything with electrical, plumbing, etc. I just want to decorate it, darn it.  We are ready to have our "second home" so I guess it's time to take the plunge and enjoy the journey.

Any ideas of what we're going to do to it?  If it were up to you, what would you do?  Any pointers before we dig in?

Stay tuned my friends, it's going to be a journey!

It happens every year yet it always comes as a surprise. A giant Colorado snow storm in May.  It's always just when I'm thinking about taking the shorts out of storage, planting some flowers, and planning some backyard BBQs.  And somehow, it always still shocks me.  Not only with those little things but also with my emotions.

KEEPING SPIRITS UP

Keeping it real here, I have been struggling. The crazy springtime storms hit and BAMM!  Laziness, short temper, depression, and lack of motivation kicks in.  When it happens, here's what I do:

  • drink a glass of wine or a beer
  • binge on social media
  • eat chocolate
  • don't do anything on my priority list
  • stay in pajamas all day
  • don't exercise
  • cancel all my plans

I haven't quite mastered this one yet but here are a few things I know I should do that will make me feel better.  So when I check one of these off, I think I automatically get to do the first bullet point on the previous list:

  • pray and read the Bible
  • take a hot bath with essential oils, with lights turned down while listening to meditation music
  • listen to "I am awesome" music
  • exercise
  • spend quality time with my husband and daughter
  • change out of pajamas, put makeup on, and fix my hair

How do you keep your spirits up when there is a huge change in the weather?  What is your reality? What are your goals?

KEEPING WARM

A spring capsule in Colorado can be tricky. The weather is all over the place.  When picking out each item for the capsule [which runs March-May], I ask myself, will I be able to wear this in 30 degree weather but also in 70 degree weather?  The answer is typically yes.  If looking at the outfit in this post, you may be thingking, really? 70 degree weather?  To break it down, I may wear my Sorel Fancy boots with light socks, shorts, and a tank, thermal tied around my waist for an outdoor day. Or sandals, my jogger sweats, a tee, hair pulled up for a casual day. On the flip side, all the choices are great for layering when the weather gets stupid in the spring. No need to have a closet full of random stuff you "need". Don't overthink it, keep it simple, keep it fun.

Is spring dressing hard for you? What are your challenges? What are your secrets to success? What are your staples?

I hope you have an excellent weekend,

Janie

Last summer, we got to spend a whole week with the whole family. It was amazing.

I am extremely blessed to have a mom and two older sisters who I get to call best friends. Oh how I love these mamas.  We may not always see eye to eye on all things parenting, but I know I can always count on their prayers and support.  We answered a few questions the other day in honor of Mother's Day.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A MOM?

Katie: Getting to see and participate in each stage of growth - seeing the life that comes into their eyes when they learn or understand something new, and the joy that it brings to them.

Karen: The joy that my kids bring to me, the way they bless my heart, the way they love me *almost* unconditionally.

Janie: Snuggles, laughter and having ah-ha moments about what life is all about through children.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF BEING A MOM?

Katie: Letting go. Along with each new stage, and as they grow in maturity, trying to balance out how much instruction or discipline they need vs how much freedom they need in order to grow.

Karen: Each kid is different and also constantly changing. I am constantly trying to learn and figure out what works with each kid at different times.

Janie: I have two. First, not comparing myself (as a mom) or my daughter to others. With the many opinions and techniques for raising kids, it can be hard not to do so, even by the people who mean well. Second, having fear of my daughter getting hurt or loosing her. In my flesh, I want to have control but know she is not mine, she is God's. I need to speak against fear and put her fully into God's hands.... daily.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOM MOMENT?

Katie: Having to chase Samantha around the doctor's office and pull her out from under the table so the nurse could give her shots...when she was like 7! It took us about 20 minutes before we could manage to give her the shots. And it was late in the day - we were their last patients, and the whole ordeal made them have to close late.   Or....the fact that EVERYWHERE we go, Samantha is always bringing random strangers/other moms and exchange phone numbers so that she can have a play date with some kid she just randomly met.  Which is torturous for this introvert mama!

Karen: Ha! I honestly can't think of any! It's my job to embarrass my kids, not the other way around! Haha!

Janie: I could have so many embarrassing moments. Realistically, I do things on a daily basis that could embarrass me or my daughter.  I do so many "embarrassing" things, I've had to learn how to not get embarrassed, and just roll with the punches.  I can totally relate to my sister Katie on this one though!

REAL MOM TALK... READY, GO!

Katie: I think I just like to encourage moms in all stages that even though a particular age or stage seems to take forever, or you feel like things will never change or improve, each stage in a child's life really goes by so quickly. Savor each and every moment - even the ones that are challenging. Slow down when you are quick to anger. You learn more about yourself in hear moments - our children teach us so many things, if we are willing to slow down, listen, evaluate our own thoughts and actions. Each stage of childhood is such a blessing. Children are a blessing, period. Even the challenging ones.

Karen: Real mom talk... hmm... Just when you think you've got things under control and you get to go to bed early, your 3-year-old pees on the bathroom floor right next to the toilet, not because he doesn't know where the toilet is or how to use it, just because he wants toprove to you that he is still in control. And then he is awake until midnight in his bedroom yelling into the monitor camera (yes, he was holding the camera), "But mommy! I don't want to go to bed! I don't want to do it! But mommy!"

Janie: Some days, I am so proud of myself as my role of a mom.  I have the school day planned and we conquer it beautifully, I feed her healthy foods, I cook dinner, I spend quality time with her, I don't yell, etc. Some days, I'm an emotional basket case. Some days, we stay in pajamas all day and eat crap food while I work on the computer all day and she spends way too much time on electronics.   Some days we adventure like rock stars.  Some days it's a combination. I don't have it all together and I'm glad to have moms in my corner who are transparent about real life. I'm not saying it's okay to be a bad mom but it's more than okay to be perfectly imperfect. Find your people, love hard, and make sure you invite Jesus to be the coach on your team.

Let's be encouraged as moms and go encourage others. So grateful to the many moms out there who have helped me along as a child and now as a mother myself.  It takes a village.  Together, let's Mom so hard!

home tour | sunroom

MEP-232990040014lowres.jpg

I'm back with our home tour!  Today, with our sunroom.  Before Marcus and I got married, this room was the catch all room.  It had so much potential.  We started by ripping out the carpet [thanks to our friend Stephanie who just jumps right into home projects with us when she just comes over for a beer]. From there, I attempted to add some decor and furniture using what we had and a few things I scored from Good Will.  However, it always looked like a cluster, therefore continuing to be a catch all room.  I needed direction in a major way.  So how does one find direction?  Pinterest of course!  I started a sunroom board.  When finding a style for a room and your home, it can be overwhelming, especially when jumping on Pinterest.  Here are my pointers:

  • Pick a color palette.  Choose timeless, classic colors.  My personal preference are neutrals because I can easily accentuate with color as my style changes every so often.  I once chose red furniture for my salon.  I got so sick of it after a short while but couldn't change it out spending a lot of time and/or money.
  • Pick a "style".  When pinning pictures you like, take notice of what they all have in common.  That is most likely what you really like about the picture/room.  Look closely at my Pinterest board.  You'll notice the color palette (white!) but what else do you see?  I noticed all the beds/couches have blankets and pillows just kind of thrown on.  Clean but laid back.  I also noticed low tables, pops of blacks and romantic colors, and simple prints and textures.
  • Think lifestyle.  Some people think I'm crazy having white when I have a young child at home but it's the best!  I just needed to make sure everything could be easily washed.  We wear shoes to and from the yard all the time and the rug has held up great and I can use a carpet cleaner over it (although I never have).  I have removable  pillow cases and a duvet cover for easy washing.
  • No impulsive buying!  Now that you have a color palette, a style, and lifestyle figured out, clean up your inspiration board to reflect that.  Do not buy anything unless it has a specific spot or function for your room.
  • Reuse and recycle.  There are some things you just want to buy new, and that's just fine.  However, once you have a plan, you will be shocked at how you can see things differently.  It may be something you already have or something at a garage sale or a thrift store.  It may be just right how it is or you may have to put a coat of paint on it.  I would say three quarters of our sunroom is reused and recycled.

Do you know your colors and style or are you getting some ideas?  Are you an impulsive buyer?  Do you love to reuse and recycle?  Share your thoughts with me and if you have a Pinterest board you want to share with me, please do so.

What room shall we dive into next?

In case you missed it, I just got done with the 10x10 Challenge hosted by Caroline of Un-Fancy and Lee of Style Bee.

As I was thinking about how to recap the challenge (I would much rather just post pictures and not have the pressure of putting thoughts into words), I read through what Caroline had to say about the challenge on her blog.  If you haven't checked it out, be sure to.  I love her outlook on wardrobe.  I'm going to take her lead and do a Q+A.

10x10 Spring 2017 Challenge | Q+A

1 | Did your clothes work for the weather?

Yes, they did!  This is a big celebration for me because I'm always the girl who is not wearing the right thing for the weather.  This challenge was awesome for me because for the first time, I checked the weather for the day before dressing.

2 | Did you wear anything that wasn’t included in your 10 pieces?

No.  We were out of our house during the challenge so this was an easy one for me.  I only had what I packed!

3 | How did laundry work out?

Well... to be transparent or not?  I'm a dirty hippy so laundry worked out great ;-) It was a little challenging to do laundry for such a small amount of clothing but I was able to make it work by spot cleaning or throwing it in with Marcus' and Rheya's clothes.  Caroline mentioned using a steamer in her post... not only will it get out wrinkles but will kill any bacteria lurking in the fibers.  Because of that, it can even remove faint odors.  I will definitely remember this moving forward!

4 | Were there any pieces you included that felt like mistakes?

Not really.

5 | Which piece was your favorite?

My black skinny jeans.  I love the color, the way they fit, and the way they look with pretty much everything.

6 | Which outfit was the most outside your comfort zone?

The dress with the chambray shirt.  I wore the dress backwards to change it up.  As you can see, the back of this dress is open... which means the front of the dress is completely open when wearing it backward.  Even though my chambray shirt was buttoned up all the way, I still felt exposed.  However, this outfit ended up being one of my favorites!

7 | What did you learn about your personal style?

Gotta have my hats.  I already knew this but dang... 5 out of my 10 outfits were worn with a hat.  I love my accessories.

8 | What would you do differently next time?

Ditch the black tank but only because of the material.  The material showed even the smallest spots and collected so much fuzz and loose hairs.  I would still want to keep a black tank (surprise!) but something with better material and maybe a tad more level of interest.

9 | Why did you do the challenge in the first place?

I am still in the process of being a minimalist.  I am super inspired and encouraged by the teachings of Caroline Joy, Joshua Becker, and Dave Ramsey to name a few.  The concept of less {stuff} is more {life} has been a game changer in our family's life.  This challenge came at a perfect time, a time where we had to be away from home for two weeks.  The combination was a perfect opportunity to jump on board.

10 | Will you do the challenge again?

Absolutely.  Often in fact.  Perhaps every season and any trips/vacations.  I kind of see it as a "cleanse".

11 | Any final notes?

In the beginning of the challenge, I had already gotten bored of my options.  But by the end, I could have kept going longer with these clothes.  In fact, I did!  When I started the capsule wardrobe, I remember having a similar feeling.  As with any life challenges, it can be tough in the beginning and there is a learning curve but in the end, many times I find my challenges are simply discoveries.

I have loved being part of a community, #spring10x10.  Check out some of these IG accounts who did the challenge.  Their style is right up my alley.

And that's a wrap.  That was a marathon blogging every day for two weeks straight!  I will get back to the normal 1-3 posts per week.  I will be finishing up the home tour, and no promises but we will hopefully be blogging about a travel trailer remodel we are doing!  I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with the project but hey... discoveries.

With Love,

Janie

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Weather:  Chilly in Colorado today.  Cloudy, rainy, and in the 40s.

Work/Activities:  Homeschool with Rheya and working in the home office all day until we head off to photograph, cheer on, and participate in some seminars at Ripple Effect Black Belt Testing (we are currently high blue belts so our testing isn't quite yet!).  To be honest, I may end up in pajamas and workout clothes all day.

STYLE NOTES

BELT IT  I wear this sweater so much over my everyday outfits.  It keeps me warm and cozy when I need to throw something on real quick.  I've never thought about putting a belt over it and wear it as an actual outfit.  I'm digging it.  Do you ever belt your long cardigans?

KEEPIN' IT CASUAL Minimal jewelry, sports bra, messy hair, and beauty makeup.  Just the right amount of balance for me!

I will be recapping on Day 14.  If you do the challenge, be sure to tag your photos on social media #spring10x10.  Also, tag me so I can see! @janierocek

Wear/Washability:  Everything here is pretty easy.  Easy to wash, easy to wear, super casual.

STYLE NOTES

LAYERS  I love layers.  For one, I think it just looks great.  Two, you're ready for crazy seasonal changes.  When doing a capsule wardrobe, it's easy to layer when you have all the basic elements covered because everything goes together.

ACCESSORIES  I love when I find accessories that can be worn with different options.  I bought this wrap necklace off my fabulous stylist friend Tina (who by the way is the layering queen) at a shoot last week.  Yes, it's a necklace but you can wear it as a headband, wrap it around a ponytail, even wear it as a belt.  LOVE when I find these treasures.

This challenge has been just that.  A challenge but fun.  Fun to learn about myself, fun to be apart of a community.  If you're thinking about doing it, do it!  You can do it anytime.  I know I will be doing it again.  And be sure to tag your photos on social media #spring10x10.  Also, tag me so I can see! @janierocek

See you tomorrow!

It's Day 10 of the Spring 2017 10x10 Challenge hosted by Un-Fancy and Style Bee.  If you want to know more about it or do it yourself, you can get info and inspo here.  Even though this was a 10 day challenge, it was a 15 day challenge for me because we were away from home.  We ended up coming home early so I'm going to cut it off at 10 days.  However, I'm still going to make sure I post all 10 of my outfits.

WHAT AM I WEARING THAT'S NOT INCLUDED IN THE CHALLENGE?

Black Belt

Stud Earrings

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Weather:  Pretty in Colorado today, sunny and in the 70s.  It will drop down to the 40s tonight.

Work/Activities:  All day in a studio for a photo shoot.  Will be doing hair/makeup and it will be low-key.

Wear/Washability:  Love the way this dress fits.  It's fitting but not tight.  Comfortable enough to wear and work in all day.  The tank is cotton so it has the tendency to get fuzzies after a couple wears but the fit has held up great.

STYLE NOTES

NOT LOVING THIS LOOK to be completely honest.  After 8 days of wearing the same 10 items plus a few accessories, I was feeling stuck.  Partly, it was great because I had to think outside the box but I think I reached too hard on this one.  The black tank just isn't the right material or shape to pair with dress.  Not to mention the belt just wasn't tight enough to fir around my waist right.

PICK A BELT THAT MATCHES THE SHOES I used to hate wearing black, brown and/or navy together.  I always felt those colors were base colors and they shouldn't be worn together.  Over the years, that has changed but I still think I like when the belt, bag, and shoes are the same when it comes to black or brown.  I may have to switch out the belt for the rest of the challenge.

This challenge has been enlightening and it's been fun doing this with a community.  If you want to jump in, do it!  And be sure to tag your photos on social media #spring10x10.  Also, tag me so I can see! @janierocek

I still have 3 more outfits to share.  See you tomorrow!

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Weather:  It's nice here in Colorado today.  Partly sunny and high 60-70 degrees all day, and into high 40s tonight.

Work/Activities:  Morning homeschool with Rheya and then an editorial shoot all day into the early night.  The shoot will be staged inside but shot outside so layers will be good.  May bring my sweater and scarf.

Wear/Washability:  Love the way this dress fits.  It's fitting but not tight.  Comfortable enough to wear and work in all day.

STYLE NOTES

MIX IT UP This dress can definitely be dressed up which is why it's good to have in a capsule.  However, it can also be dressed down.  Don't be afraid to throw on a ball cap and sandals with a basic dress to play it more casual.

WEAR THE HAIR MESSY WITH A HAT To keep my look more feminine, I like to keep my hair loose and messy but not too styled.  My hair is a little more messy in these pictures than I normally wear it but yeah...

KEEP A DOG OR BABY WITH YOU ALL DAY You all of a sudden become way cuter.

That's it for today.  I've been learning a lot through this challenge.  I will be recapping on Day 14.  If you want to jump in, do it!  And be sure to tag your photos on social media #spring10x10.  Also, tag me so I can see! @janierocek

It's Day 8 of the Spring 2017 10x10 Challenge hosted by Un-Fancy and Style Bee.  If you want to know more about it or jump on board (it's never too late!), you can get info and inspo here.

On Day 4, I chatted about what's not included in the challenge and keeping it minimal.

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED IN A CAPSULE WARDROBE OR THIS CHALLENGE?

Hats

Bags

Accessories

Scarves

Jewelry

Base Layers (underwear, tights, bodysuits, socks, etc)

Workout Wear

PJs/Loungewear

Today, I wanted to highlight the jewelry.  I seriously need to update my jewelry options.  I used to be way more into loud, chunky jewelry and my style has changed more minimalist the last couple of years.  With that being said, I have some incredible pieces that were Marcus' mom's... man, did that woman have style!  They are the bolder pieces you see above in the pictures but they are like nothing you can find in stores unless you score at an antique store or auction.  If you have these in your collection, keep them.  You can transform an outfit with jewelry.

As I was arranging the colored Easter eggs to take some pictures, there was one egg that really caught my attention.  It was an egg Rheya had decorated, one that read "you found me".  It was cute and genius when she wrote it out yesterday, imaging one of the kiddos would pick that egg up and read that message during their Easter egg hunt today!

You found me.

Amazing Grace.  Once lost, now found.

Out of the mouths of babes.  This little message on this little egg is a powerful one.  The Bible says, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray; each of us has turned to our own way." (Isaiah 53:6)  As humans, we sin, we make mistakes, we fail.  That is why Jesus came.  Jesus declared His mission with the words, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).  Jesus came to find us.  It is a clear expression of the Creator’s love for His lost creation that He pursues us and desires to make us His own. THINGS TO CONSIDER

Weather:  Pretty in Colorado today, sunny and in the 60s.  It will drop down to the 40s tonight.

Work/Activities:  PJs all morning while I do laundry and then to karate.  Right after that it's go, go, go.  A birthday lunch with father-in-law (Happy Birthday Earl!), errands, coffee with my friend Megan who is in town from Arizona, and then dinner at a friend's to meet the new boyfriend... who is giving me a scoby to make my own kombucha, yay!!

Wear/Washability:  Can't go wrong with these jeggings by Spanx.  They keep that "just washed fit" right out of the wash and even after you wear a few times.  The Zebra shirt needs to be taken out of the dryer right away so it doesn't wrinkle.  The tank is cotton so it has the tendency to get fuzzies after a couple wears but the fit has held up great.

STYLE NOTES

TANK OVER SHIRT?  I don't normally wear a tank over a tshirt but when you only have 10 pieces, why not?  I actually like the way this look turned out.  Great note for future: Pick tanks and shirts that can be layered various ways.

TO TUCK OR NOT TO TUCK  When it comes to casual comfort, I like my shirts untucked.  However, tucking gives shape to a triangle, rectangle, and hour glass figure.

HAIR UP, YOU STUDS!  I like to wear hair up with this to show off the necklines.  Pair it with some pretty studs for earrings.  Or for a night out, wear a dangly earring.

That's Saturday in nutshell.  I'll post some live outfit videos on Instagram today @janierocek.  Hmmmmm.... now, what to wear for Easter Sunday??  If you're jumping in on the challenge, be sure to tag your photos on social media #spring10x10.  Also, tag me so I can see!   I want to do this together @janierocek

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Weather:  Gorgeous in Colorado today.  Denver is  in the high 70s, Loveland in the low 70s. It will drop down to 40-50 tonight.

Work/Activities:  Commuting to Denver to meet with clients and do a few wedding trial runs with brides.  Then commuting back and off to a kid Easter egg hunt with friends.

Wear/Washability:  Good.  The chambray shirt is lightweight so needs to be hung out of washer/dryer right away so it doesn't wrinkle EXCEPT my puppy ripped this shirt a couple days ago!  It happened to rip in the front towards the bottom so luckily I can still wear it if I'm creative.

STYLE NOTES

TRY SOMETHING NEW  If I weren't doing the 10x10, I would have never paired these items together.  It's one of my favorite looks so I'm glad I did!

WEAR IT BACKWARDS  When I shop, I try to find clothes that are reversible, can be worn multiple ways, or even backwards.  I have never worn this dress backwards before because it is backless but it works with layers!

SET AN EXAMPLE  When I first came out in the outfit, I had a few more buttons undone and you could see my cleavage (or lack there of).  As an adult woman, I thought it was fine but my daughter did not approve... "You can't take pictures of that Mom!" "You're not looking for a new husband!"  LOL!!  I took pictures anyway but the more I thought about it, she was right.  Not about the husband part because I'm sure my husband would be happy to see me in that!  BUT I would never let her wear something like that when she's a teen and it's not the person I want to represent.  I can look beautiful and sexy without showing too much skin.  Thank you Rheya for that style tip!

Have you done the 10x10 challenge?  Or do you want to?  What things do you learn about yourself during the process?

Spring 2017 10 X 10 | Day 4

IMG_7857.jpg
IMG_7864.jpg

Is it Thursday already?!  It's Day 4 of the Spring 2017 10x10 Challenge hosted by Un-Fancy and Style Bee.  If you want to know more about it or jump on board (it's not too late!), you can get info and inspo here.

I wanted to chat a little bit about what's not included in a capsule wardrobe or the Spring 10x10 Challenge today.

What's not INCLUDED IN a Capsule wardrobe or THis CHALLENGE?

Hats

Bags

Accessories

Scarves

Jewelry

Base Layers (underwear, tights, bodysuits, socks, etc)

Workout Wear

PJs/Loungewear

For those who know me, know I'm an accessory junkie.  Before starting a capsule wardrobe, I would go shopping and come home 2 hats, a scarf, a pair of shoes, and handful of rings... absolutely no pants or shirts.  Seriously, what am I going to wear?  Honestly, I could probably fashion something with just the accessories and be completely covered.

The point is this:  The idea of doing a capsule wardrobe or this challenge is to minimize.  To simplify.  I realize I still have a ton of closet clutter with the "stuff" not included.  So this challenge for also encourages me to limit the amount of pieces in the "not included" category.  If you're like me, keep reading.

Today, I just want to look at what I consider the Essentials +: Base layers, belts, bags, hats, and scarves.

The essentials are base layers, belts, and bags.  With day to day life and many of my outfits, I need these things to function.  I prefer to function without a bra but I think the people around me prefer if function with it.

The + are hats and scarves.  I don't need them in day to day life but I like to have them as an option.  They can totally change up the look of an outfit.  As far as function, sometimes I just need a hat to tame my mane or hide the fact I haven't washed my hair in 5 days.  Scarves can give you just the right amount of warmth with an outfit.

To keep it minimal, here is what I chose:

2 Bags | Cognac Messenger Bag & Black Satchel with included Clutch (similar)

1 Scarf | wide infinity scarf with frayed edges

2 Hats | wide rim fedora and ball cap

1 Belt | black leather belt (prefer a cognac one but chose not to purchase new items this capsule)

2 Bras | black strapless and black lace bralette
